I come at the idea that high performance shouldn't hurt people as a sport psychologist who has been told by coaches, "I break them, you fix them." And I did that for years, out of a sense of duty and not really understanding that there is a better way. Neuroscience advances, plus evidence-based work in psychology tell us way more about how the brain is wired, and how humans perform best. And that is not while under threat or pressure, but when they feel safe...and when their relationship with themselves is aligned and not at war. These ideas fly in the face of so much of the "break them down to build them up" dogma or the "people are machines" dogma that so many high-performance domains sign up to. I challenge sacred beliefs at both the organizational as well as the personal world - that rather than thinking we have to be hard - on our people or ourselves - it's about being softer and kinder. And I back these ideas up with story and science in a way that people find inspiring and challenging at the same time.
